And most times it's all a mirage. The blurry target? It's a brick wall. Or a wall that really loves you, but also keeps urging you to change. So why thrust? Because there's nothing quite like the hope of a new and improved self, and the fantasy it allows you.

I put my hand on him. Touching him was always so important to me. It was something I lived for. I never could explain why. Little, nothing touches. My fingers against his shoulder. The outsides of our thighs touching as we squeezed together on the bus. I couldnt explain it, but I needed it. Sometimes I imagined stitching all of our touches together. How many hundreds of thousands of fingers brushing against each other does it take to make love?

Opening yourself up, even if it means your heart and soul are crushed. That's what makes you stronger. That's what gives you the power to move on, put the past behind you. To get out there, and get your heart stomped on all over again. 

And I loved him, jesus how I loved him. It wasnt love of course, even I can see now that it was infatuation, but at the time it near enough killed me. Its so passionate, so intense, so painful, that even years afterward you still feel the hurt when you hear their name.

People always talk about that moment when they fell for their best friend. There never was a moment for me and mine. I've always loved him.

It was less difficult than it probably should have been to believe that he felt exactly the way about me that I felt about him. I didn't always believe this, but there were times--between classes, say, when we almost collided in the stairwell, and then we just stood there for a few seconds on the landing, face-to-face, not moving, before we continued in opposite directions. If things were normal, wouldn't he have said something, like hi, and couldn't it perhaps be a promising sign that instead he'd said nothing 

If you ask why I'm not interested in someone, I might say their nose is too big, or they don't know how to dress, or they're too thin or too fat or too plain. but the truth is, I only notice those things because of the real reason--that i'm just not feeling anything. but people don't want to hear that. they always want an explanation. so I have to come up with something concrete even though feelings aren't like that. if I did meet a guy and I felt happy with him for whatever reason, I wouldn't give a rat's ass what he wore or how tall he was or what he did for a living. but when i'm with someone and it just doesn't feel right, that's when I start noticing the bad haircut or Chicago accent or unibrow. and it's true that tomorrow I may go home with someone who you think is totally wrong for me. and the next day I might meet a perfectly nice guy who you think I should feel excited about, but I don't. but if I do go home with someone, it means for a change, something feels right. for a change, I'm feeling hopeful. I just want to feel happy when i'm with someone.

You can love anybody in the world but there's one problem -so can they.

Most of our life is a series of images, they pass us by like towns on the highway. But sometimes a moment stuns us as it happens, and we know that this instant is more than a fleeting image. We know that this moment, every part of it, will live on forever

I propose that it is very possible for two people to be head over heels in love and not know it. I also propose that it is possible for two people to be head over heels in love and simply not be right for each other.

I wanted him to think I was pretty, I wanted him to be reminded of me by stuff I liked-- pistachios and hooded sweatshirts and the Dylan song "Girl from the North Country"-- and I wanted him to miss me when we were apart. I wanted him to feel, when we were lying in bed together, like he couldn't imagine anywhere better.
